DC6 — Economic metabolism and unequal exchange: a Global North / Global South perspective
Project title | Economic metabolism and unequal exchange: a Global North / Global South perspective (DC6) |
Supervisors | Jason Hickel (UAB), Dominik Wiedenhoder (BOKU) |
Work package | WP4 — Macroeconomics, finance and the natural world for just socioeconomic transitions |
Objectives | The objective is to assess how shifts in global trade networks occurring over the last decade affect (i) unequal exchange of materials, energy, labour, etc. across countries and (ii) social indicators. It also aims to assess (iii) the impacts of policy changes on the scale and intensity of drain over time. This project will advance recent work on appropriation through unequal exchange. |
Expected results | DC6 will provide a model of the economic metabolism allowing, for the first time in the literature, to provide estimates of (i) unequal exchanges at a country level, (ii) social impacts and (iii) the impacts of policy changes. The project will derive policy recommendations. |
